Candle Care Guide
Candle Care Guide
At Hayes & White, we want you to enjoy your candles safely and for as long as possible. With proper care, you can maximise your candle’s burn time and maintain its beautiful scent. Here are some simple tips for caring for your candles:
1. First Burn: Setting the Foundation
- On your first burn, allow the candle to melt across the entire surface. This prevents tunnelling and ensures an even burn for the life of your candle.
- Aim for a burn time of 2-3 hours on the first use.
2. Trim the Wick
- Before each use, trim the wick to approximately 5mm (1/4 inch). This helps to reduce soot, prevents the flame from becoming too large, and prolongs the life of your candle.
- Use a wick trimmer or scissors to achieve the perfect length.
3. Burn Time Guidelines
- Avoid burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. This prevents the glass from overheating and helps preserve the scent.
- Always let the wax cool and solidify before lighting it again.
4. Safety First
- Never leave a burning candle unattended or within reach of children or pets.
- Keep the candle away from flammable materials, draughts, and heat sources.
- Ensure the candle is placed on a heat-resistant surface and is in a safe, stable position.
5. Reuse Your Candle Jar
- Once your candle is finished, repurpose the jar! Simply wash it with warm, soapy water to remove any remaining wax and wick.
- Use your jar as a decorative pot, a storage container for small items, or even refill it with a new candle.
6. Extinguish Safely
- Always extinguish your candle with a snuffer or by gently blowing it out.
- Avoid using the lid or water to extinguish the flame, as this can cause damage or splatter hot wax.
Common Candle FAQs
Why is my candle producing soot?
- Soot can occur if the wick is too long or the candle is placed in a draught. Make sure to trim the wick and burn the candle in a stable environment.
Why is my candle tunnelling?
- Tunnelling happens when the wax doesn't melt evenly across the surface. To fix this, wrap aluminium foil around the top of the jar, leaving the centre open, and burn the candle for a couple of hours until the wax melts evenly.
Can I burn my candle all the way to the bottom?
- For safety reasons, stop burning your candle when only 1cm of wax remains at the base. This prevents overheating of the jar.
